Abstract
1,135,345. Standby power supply systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 19 Oct., 1967, No. 47643/67. Heading H2H. A standby power supply system of the " nobreak " type comprises two constant current supply sources 2, 3, each having a Zener diode and a capacitor 9, 11 and 10, 12 respectively connected across the output terminals thereof, the sources supplying a load 1 by way of silicon controlled rectifiers 4, 5. Closure of a switch 13 energizes the source 2 whereupon the capacitor 11 charges to a voltage determined by the Zener diode 9-say 600 volts. To connect the source 2 to the load 1 a pulse from a pulse generator 6 is applied to the S.C.R. 4 which is rendered conductive. The current in the load 1 is such as to maintain a voltage of 570 thereacross and the Zener diode 9 becomes non-conductive. When it is desired to supply the load 1 from the alternative source 3 the switch 14 is first closed to energize the source 3 thereby charging the capacitor 12 to a voltage determined by Zener diode 10, again 600 volts. Thus the S.C.R. 5 is forwardly biased by 30 volts and when a pulse from pulse generator 7 is applied to S.C.R. 5 it will conduct and the capacitor 12 will discharge into the load 1, thereby back-biasing the S.C.R. 4 which will then become non-conductive. When the capacitor 12 is discharged the Zener diode 10 becomes non-conductive and, because the S.C.R. 4 is now non-conductive, the capacitor 11 re-charges and the system is ready for a change-over of supply sources when required. The pulse generators 6, 7 are actuated manually or automatically from a control unit 8 which may include suitable alarm devices for each source.
