Abstract

1,134,975. o-Phthalic acid esters. WACKER CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 26 June, 1967 [24 June, 1966], No. 29352/67. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a process for the continuous manufacture of o-phthalic acid esters from phthalic anhydride and alkanols having 8 to 10 C-atoms, in the absence of an esterification catalyst and in the absence of a distillation aid, in which the esterification is carried out at a temperature within the range of from 180‹ to 250‹ C. to a conversion of 94 to 97% of theory, the o-phthalic acid ester thereby produced is separated from the unreacted starting products, in a liquid or vapour form, by fractionation, and the latter are again returned to the reaction, and the water of esterification is removed from the reaction mixture at the rate at which it is formed. The water of esterification is preferably removed in a heteroazotropic mixture with the alcohol by passing an inert gas through the reaction mixture. The process is described with reference to a flow diagram. Examples are given describing the preparation of the di-2-ethylhexyl-, di-n-octyl-, and di-n-decyl-o-phthalates.
