Abstract

1,134,611. Reclaiming waste paper. AUSTRALIAN PAPER MFRS. Ltd. 3 Jan., 1967 [28 Jan., 1966], No. 274/67. Heading D2A. Contraries are removed from waste paper in a two-stage process. In the first stage, the waste paper is fed while dry or semi-dry to a first treatment zone between coaxial cylindrical or prismatic surfaces rotating at different angular speeds about their common axis, one or both of the surfaces having projections to thrash the paper and dislodge high-density contraries, and these contraries are removed. In the second stage, water is added to waste paper from the first stage to disintegrate and defibre it and remove the remaining non-fibrous material. As shown, a perforated drum 6 is rotated as shown about its axis 8. A coaxial shaft 9 is rotated in the same direction but faster. The inner surface of the drum and outer surface of the shaft are provided with plates 11 a &c., set at an angle to thrash dry waste paper fed in at one end by an Archimedean screw and to forward it to the other end. Small, heavy contraries loosened by the thrashing fall through the perforations on to a conveyor 20. Dust may be removed by a suction fan 21 and duct 22. When the paper reaches the end of drum 6, it passes to a second drum 13, which is generally similar but has an unperforated first section in which the paper is soaked by water supplied from sprays or jets or through the shaft 16. Disintegrated fibres pass through the perforations of the drum 13 and are carried away by screw conveyor 37. Large contraries are discharged from the far end of drum 13.
