The invention comprises monoazo dyes free from aromatically linked carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups and having the general formula wherein R is a radical of the benzene or heterocyclic series, X is H, alkyl, alkoxy, acylamino or halogen, Y is H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy, R 2 is an optionally substituted alkyl group, e.g. haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl or carboalkoxyalkyl, or a group R 1 and R 1 is -CH(R 4 )CH(R 5 )-O-CH(R 6 )CH(R 7 )-OCOR 3 wherein R 4 to R 7 are H or C 1 -C 2 alkyl radicals and R 3 is a saturated or unsaturated C 1 -C 4 alkyl group containing at least one sulphonic acid, carboxylic acid and/or ammonium group. Preferred diazo components are mono- or dicyano anilines optionally substituted by halogen and nitro groups and amino thiazoles. They are prepared by diazotization and coupling or by acylation of azo dyes containing N-hydroxyalkyl groups in the coupling component. The dyes dye polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or condensation products of terephthalic acid and 1,4-bis-(hydroxymethyl) -cyclohexane, cellulose mono and triacetates, synthetic polyamides and polyacrylonitrile in orange, red, violet, brown, blue and scarlet shades.
