Abstract

1,134,038. Bearings. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 28 July, 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 33984/66. Heading F2A. An arrangement for guiding and supporting a shaft 1 which is rotatable about a vertical axis comprises fluid bearings 6 and 7 and a fluid thrust bearing 8 which is also self-aligning. A shell 22 of each bearing 6 or 7 has three radial grooves 23 therein. Each groove 23 contains a piston 24 which is provided with an integral tube 31. The pistons having grooves 35 therein are encircled by O-rings 34 to facilitate damping. Damping of the thrust bearing 8 is effected through an axially-slidable bearing member 14 which is urged upwardly by a spring 20. Pressurized-fluid is supplied to the bearings 6 and 7 via pipes 21, 21<SP>1</SP>, chambers 33, the tubes 31 in the pistons 24, chambers 29 and radial passages 30; and is supplied to the thrust bearing 8 via a pipe 17, an annular space 16 and passages 18. The shaft 1 carries a rotor 2 of an electric motor having a stator 3 and is bored axially to receive a flexible shaft 44 therein, the latter being coupled to the shaft 1 at a point 45 which is the intersection of the dynamic axis.
