In a chopping and comminuting device of the type comprising a cylindrical housing enclosing a rotary cutter head cooperating with a shear bar, the rotor knives 50 have offset seating surfaces clamped on to chordally disposed seating surfaces 20 formed on pairs of axially spaced discs 5 by means of bolts 32 threaded into spanner blocks 34 straddling the space between adjacent plates 5, 5 in axially aligned openings 13 therein. Adjustment of the knives radially is provided by eye bolts 39 through the eye of which passes the clamping bolts 32 and whose threaded end engages either with spanner elements 42, 43 clamped around the leg 15 in trailing relationship to the blade, or with anchor lugs (165) (Fig. 8, not shown) extending widthwise between the associated pair of plates. One end of the blade is arranged to lead the other by either using a flexible blade and indexing the seating surface on successive pairs of plates (Fig. 1) or by using a rigid knife in which the offset seating surfaces are staggered progressively from an offset in one direction at one end of the knife to an offset in the opposite direction at the other end so as to incline the knife in relation to the axially aligned seating surfaces on the plates (Figs. 6 and 9, not shown).
