Abstract

1,133,101. Wire coating apparatus. WILLIAM BAIN & CO., (WIRE PRODUCTS) Ltd. 19 May, 1966 [20 May, 1965], No. 21513/ 65. Heading D1L. Apparatus for coating wire comprises a coating box 9 for the reception of plastics material, the box having guides 16, 17 for guiding the wire through a flexible wiping nozzle 18, and a curing oven, and the arrangement being such that the wire is guided along a path following substantially the catenary of the wire. A well 15 is provided adjacent the nozzle 18, above which well, a hopper 14 is formed between the walls of the box and an inclined internal partition 13. In applying a coating of plastics material to one or several parallel wires, the wire is first led through an annealing furnace (4), Figs. I and 2 (not shown), maintained at a temperature of 900‹C and then through acid treatment and washing tanks (5) and. (7) respectively. The cleaned wire is then passed through a first coating box (9), a curing oven (23) maintained at a temperature 180‹-200‹C., and a quenching tank (24). The initially coated wire then passes through a second coating box (26), a curing oven (29) and a quenching tank (30) and is finally wound on spools (31). During the curing and quenching operations, the wire hangs in a catenary to preserve the concentricity of the coating.
