Abstract

1,132,607. Cervical collars. T. A. WILLIAM SON. 15 Nov., 1965 [17 Nov., 1964], No. 48379/65. Heading A5R. A cervical collar, of divided form at the back (i.e. at the portion thereof which is situated at the back of the neck when the collar is operatively in position on a patient), includes means for securing together the ends of the collar and a front portion which is slotted or cut away to leave a space between an upper part and a lower part of the collar, which parts are connected by differential screw means so that the distance between these parts may be adjusted to vary the frontal height of the collar. The collar comprises a panel of flexible sheet material, for example plastics material, in which a slot or cutaway is arranged medially of the length of the panel to extend from the lower edge of the panel, the lower portion of the slot or cutaway being bridged by a mid-member at each end of which is pivoted one end of a link or bar the other end of which is slidably pivoted to the panel adjacent the edge of the slot or cutaway; the screw means includes right hand and left hand screw-threaded means secured respectively to the mid-member and to the panel adjacent the top edge of the slot or cutaway. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the collar comprises a panel 5 which has . tapering rounded ends 6 and a medial cutaway 7 extending to a top edge portion 8. The cutaway is bridged by a curved mid-member 9 each end of which is pivotally connected by a rivet 10 to one end of a curved link 11 the other end of which is pivotally connected in slidable manner to the panel by a rivet 12 which extends through a hole 13 elongated lengthwise of the panel. The mid-member and links have rounded ends and may be formed of plastics material. Secured to the mid-member is the forked end 16 of a first rod 15 which is formed with an axial right hand screw-threaded orifice adapted to engage a complementary screwthreaded stem of a knurled headed adjusting screw member 17 which is formed with an axial left hand screw-threaded orifice adapted to engage a complementary screw-threaded stem 18 of a second rod 19 having a forked end 20 which is secured to the top edge portion of the panel. Each rod may be made of nylon. Air ventilation holes 21 may be provided in each end portion of the panel the edges of which preferably are provided with padding 22 and the ends of which may be overlapped and secured together by fastening means 23 of known adhesive hook-and-eye construction.
