Abstract

1,132,520. Making electrical contacts; forging; welding by pressure. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS Ltd. 21 Oct., 1966 [2 Nov., 1965], No. 47158/66. Headings B3A, B3H and B3R. A method of making a bi-metallic electrical contact, e.g. a rivet type contact, comprises shearing a disc from a wire of contact metal, shearing a length from wire of base metal or alloy thereof, placing the disc and wire in a die and joining their mating surfaces by pressure exerted under the impact of a fast moving weight. Copper wire is fed from a combined feeding, measuring and straightening device 100 and sheared by cutter means 31 into lengths 18. Each length 18 is heated in a device 33 which positions the length over a hole 16 in a carbide die 14. Meanwhile a disc 17 of silver or silver cadmium oxide is sheared from wire by a cutter 32 and the disc is carried by the cutter blade to a position directly above the length of copper. A guide assembly 98 is moved directly over the die 14 and when in position a weight 102 is impelled downwardly, passing through a hole 97 in the guide assembly to drive a punch holder 96 and punch 12 thereby forcing the length 18 and disc 17 against a carbide ram 15. The ram shapes the bottom of the shank of the rivet and the remaining energy in the weight 102 welds the two metals together before rebounding from the die. An hydraulic piston 20 is elevated driving a rod 106 and the ram 15 and the welded composite rod 25 is forced upwardly to a position 109 when the piston reaches the end of its stroke. The head of the rivet is shaped by tools (40), (36), Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), which are struck by the weight 102. To eject the rivet from the die 14, an hydraulic piston 111 is elevated and it contacts the rod 106 in the position where it was left by the piston 20 thereby forcing the ram 15 and rivet upwardly. A projection on the tool (40) carries the rivet to a storage space, Fig. 14 (not shown). Cooling liquid is circulated through a passage 117 in a ring 116 and a viscous liquid is introduced into the interstices between the ring and the die to help the passage of heat. The base 95 is watercooled and the various tools are mounted on blocks of copper alloy to assist in conducting heat to the base. All these operations are performed automatically in a vacuum chamber 30.
