Abstract
1,132,422. Wrapping-machines. G. HAIN. 12 May, 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 22133/67. Heading B8C. In order to ensure complete removal of air from a wrapped package, e.g. of cheese, in which the wrapper is shrunk and/or sealed by heat, heat and pressure are applied to all surfaces except one which remains unsealed to permit exit of air and is finally sealed in the same manner as the others. Packages 10 are fed along a channel 17 from the main portion of a wrapping machine with an upstanding closure flap 15 trailing. They abut a heated plate 11 and are thrust by a pusher 4 into a channel 3 where the flap is folded down but not sealed. At the end of the channel, upper and lower heating plates 20 approach each other to engage opposed faces, then withdraw and permit a pusher 22 to feed the package between end wall heaters 27 reciprocated by means 28. Finally a pusher 31 moves the package past a heater 32 against which it is thrust by means 34 to seal the flap 15. A plate 36 cools the seal. All heating operations could be followed by cooling (not detailed). The wrapper may be treated with a mould inhibitor, e.g. sorbic acid. The device may be attached to the main portion of the wrapping- machine and be replaceable by one for handling different sized packages.
