Abstract
1,132,110. Platen presses. PITNEY-BOWES Inc. 9 Nov., 1965, No. 47470/65. Headings B6C and B6D. In a platen press for franking mail with postal meter indicia the platen unit 7 moves into contact with the matter to be franked with a substantially constant imprint force of a given magnitude which is independent of the thickness of the particular piece being printed. In the press illustrated a cam 17 at each end of a shaft 3 is motor driven through a one-revolution clutch to cause a spring loaded lever 11 to pivot about a pin 12 and thus raise the rubber platen unit 7 upwards into contact with an envelope E and an inked die plate 5. The connection between each lever and the supporting base 7b of the platen unit comprises a mechanism ineluding a cam and leaf spring on the lever and a roller on the base. This mechanism ensures that the imprint force between the platen and the die plate remains the same whether the envelope is thick or thin.
