Abstract

1,132,072. Travelling-band gas filter. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO., Inc. 26 Nov., 1965 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 50392/65. Heading BIT. [Also in Division E2] In a gas filter in which a web of glass-fibre filtering medium is progressively wound from a supply spool 7 across the gas duct 4 to a take-up spool in chamber 6, the spool chambers 3, 6 each have a plurality of doors 26, (41) (Figs. 2, 6, not shown), for insertion/removal of spools, and spool end mountings 14 having slots 21 to receive spool spindles (13), which mountings may be rotated to face any door for insertion/removal in any of a plurality of directions. Fig. 3, not shown, illustrates a mounting 14, rotatable about a bolt (25) and having guide surfaces (18, 22) whereby a spindle is guided into slot 21. A leaf spring (24) springs back to retain the spindle in the slot. A screw (28) on the mounting engages any of holes (27) (Fig. 2) to lock mounting 14 facing any of three doors 26. An alternative mounting (31) (Figs. 5-9, not shown) illustrated in take-up spool chamber 6, comprises a spindle receiving slot (38) urged by a spring (42) to a tilted position (Fig. 9) in which it receives or releases a spindle (13) and pivoted back into its upright, spindle-retaining position (Fig. 8) by a sliding bar (43), which is actuated by closing the door (41) which the mounting (31) is facing. Mountings 14, (31) could be used at opposite ends of one spool, or a mounting 14, (31) could be used at one end only, the other end having a simple locating hole for spindle 13.
