Abstract

1,131,865. Catheter apparatus. DESERET PHARMACEUTICAL CO. Inc. 3 Jan., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966 (2)], No. 217/67. Heading A5R. Catheter apparatus comprises a catheter surrounded by an adjustable gripping device termed an inserter which is provided with compressible pinching portions manually displaceable from an open to a closed position so as to selectively enable (a) linear displacement of the inserter relative to and axially along the catheter when the pinching portions are in the open portion and (b) joint displacement of the inserter and catheter when the pinching portions are in the closed position. Typical apparatus comprises a catheter 20 circumscribed by an inserter 43 and having a hollow needle 30 inserted at its distal end, a rod 36 being attached to the needle in order to enable adjustment of the position of the needle with respect to the catheter. A plug 38 is joined to rod 36 at 39 and is adapted to fit into a socket 22 at the proximal end of the catheter. The inserter 43 is shaped at its forward end 52 to receive a needle sheath 62. The catheter may be enveloped in a sterile bag which is secured to the proximal end of the inserter to avoid contact with the body. The inserter may be provided with radially extending projections (Fig. 17) to facilitate gripping.
