Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In order to reduce excessive temperatures at cable joints due to the greater insulation that may be needed at these joints end portions of the conductors of a high-voltage insulated cable are made of conductive material of lower electrical resistivity than the material of the remainder of the conductor so that the resistance per unit length is less over the end portions than over the rest of the conductor. For example, in a cable having an aluminium conductor a length of copper may be brazed or cold welded to each end of the aluminium prior to the application of the insulation. The wires or segments of the conductor may be joined to individual wires or segments of the end portion and these joins may be staggered to avoid an abrupt change in the mechanical properties of the conductor, or the wires or segments may be joined en masse to the end portion. As shown, an oil-filled cable consists of six segments 2 laid about a central oil duct 3, and bound together by bronze tapes 7. The layers of oil impregnated paper insulation 4 are covered by a metallized paper screen 8 and a lead sheath 5 which is further protected by bronze taper 9 and a P.V.C. sheath 6.
