Abstract

1,131,171. Supply systems using fuel cells and rechargeable accumulators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 10 Oct., 1966, No. 45232/66. Heading H2H. A parallel combination of a fuel battery and a rechargeable accumulator is used to supply one or two electrical loads and is also arranged so that the accumulator may be recharged by the fuel battery. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which a fuel battery 201 continuously supplies a low-power load 218, and a secondary battery 202 supplies a load 221 having intermittent high-power requirements, a switch 224 being provided in this circuit. The voltage of battery 202 is monitored by a reference element 212 so that voltage drop to a predetermined level produces operation of an amplifier 213 and actuator 211 to close a switch 209 for recharge of battery 202 from the fuel battery 201, a current control device 225 allowing the charge to be made at any desired rate. In another arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), for a single load (118) having continuous low power and intermittent high power requirements, the load is directly connected to one terminal (103) and a tapping (114) of the fuel battery and is connected through a switch (122) to the secondary battery (102), the latter being connected to the terminals (103, 106) of the fuel battery for recharging by circuit elements generally similar to those described above. If the load requires a high power of a pulse type, the rechargeable accumulator may take the form of a capacitor. The various circuit elements interconnecting the load and the batteries are conventional, solid state, valve type, non-linear resistor, solenoid-operated switch and spark gap devices being mentioned.
