Abstract

1,130,378. Hydraulic jet-propulsion apparatus. TAMCO Ltd. 20 June, 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 27520/66. Heading B7V. [Also in Division F1] Hydraulic jet-propulsion apparatus for a watercraft comprises a cylindrical housing 2 situated in the hull 6 of said craft adjacent the bow thereof and containing a rotary impeller 24 that propels water of flotation through a nozzle 28 from inlet conduits 10 located below the water-line, the said nozzle being attached to a rotatable and axially movable shaft 56 so that it can be orientated in any desired horizontal direction and/or displaced downwardly to a position indicated in phantom lines below the keel of the craft when the latter is in deep water. When the nozzle is in the retracted position, its outlet end 74 can be directed towards one or other of two halves of a transversely-oriented duct or tunnel 12 through which the jet produced by the nozzle can issue so as to manoeuvre the craft in a lateral direction while it is in shallow water. The nozzle includes a plurality of ducts or passageways 70 of tapering configuration, the uppermost ends thereof being adjacent flow-straightening vanes 26. The shaft 56 is coaxial with a tubular driving-shaft 30 for the impeller 24 that extends through a non-rotatable body 22, which together with a tube 16 constituting a part of the housing 2 defines a Venturi of annular profile in a transverse cross-section. The tube 16 is slidingly lodged within a further tube 14 so that together with its contents it can be removed for inspection and maintenance purposes. The shaft 56 is displaced angularly by a pair of hydraulic or pneumatic piston-and-cylinder units 68 through mechanism (66), Fig. 4 (not shown), and axially by a further unit 58 of similar kind attached thereto by a pin 60 and collar 62. Rotation of the impeller 24 is effected by a variable-speed electric motor 54 through belts 50 and sheaves 48, 52. The vanes 26 may be dispensed with.
