Abstract

1,130,222. Microtomes. DE LA RUE FRIGISTOR. Nov. 2, 1966 [Nov. 3, 1965; Aug. 25, 1966], Nos.46509/65 and 38282/66. Heading G2J. Microtome apparatus comprising a knife 10 and a specimen holder stage housed in a chamber 1, is provided with primary cooling means for maintaining the temperature in the chamber 1 below that of the surrounding atmosphere, a first thermoelectric cooling unit 9 for controlling the temperature of the knife, a second thermoelectric cooling unit 12 for controlling the temperature of the specimen holder stage, means to permit operation of the apparatus within the closed chamber, and means to control independently the supply of electric power to each of the units 9, 12. A third thermoelectric cooling unit 15 is coupled with a cold storage compartment 16 within the chamber 1. Each thermoelectric cooling unit 9, 12, 15 is coupled with a heat transfer unit 8, 11, 14 respectively through which circulates a cooling fluid. A cooling fluid circulates in a pipe system 17 and so cools the chamber 1. This fluid may also pass through a heat exchanger 6 to cool the cooling fluid in pipes 22 which communicate with the cooling units 9, 12, 15. A refrigerator 5 cools the primary fluid in the pipes 17. A power supply 19 is connected to each thermoelectric cooling unit.
