Abstract
113,005. Blatchford, C. A. Feb. 9, 1917. Limbs, artificial.- Knee and ankle joints are provided with self - contained ball bearings and with improved means for adjusting and locking in adjusted position cones co - operating with bail bearings. T'he knee joint of an artificial leg having a recessed upper end a, Fig. 1, of the lower member b adapted to receive a ball-shaped end c of the upper member d and bearing-plates e secured to the member band carrying a spindle f, is provided with self-contained ball bearings each comprising inner and outer race rings n, Fig. 2, held together against separation by means of an outer ring or case h mounted in a recess in a sleeve g secured to the member d. The inner rings of the self-contained ball bearings engage a conical boss i on one end of the spindle and a conical boss k screwed on to the other end. Recesses l, Fig. 4, formed in the outer ends of the bosses and a recess u in each bearing-plate e are adapted to receive a locking-pin v &c., so that when locking-nuts l are screwed on the ends of the spindle, the spindle and the boss k are locked to the bearing-plates e. In a modification'of the locking-device, the bosses are each provided with screwed recesses adapted to register with a screwed recess in the bearing-member, and are locked in position by means of a set-screw. In an ankle joint, the spindle is carried by a U-shaped piece q, Fig. 1, mounted on a bolt r secured to the member b and the sleeve member is mounted centrally on a rod n secured to the foot m.
