A saucepan comprises an open-topped, walled container 1 for liquid to be heated therein, having an enlarged rim or lip 4 adjacent the open top and providing a liquid receiving space from which liquid can return to the container, a hollow liquidrestraining member 5 having an open bottom and an open top, in the wall of which are formed a number of apertures 9 to permit of the flow of liquid, foam or froth therethrough, the liquid-restraining member being adapted to be partiallly received within said container and supported from the wall thereof so as to form an upper extension of said container with the apertures adjacent the liquid receiving space, the arrangement being such that when the level of the liquid being heated, or foam or froth thereof, rises within the container and reaches or exceeds the level of the apertures in the liquid-restraining member, the liquid, foam or froth may pass through the apertures into the liquid receiving space from which liquid returns into the container either between the wall of the liquid-restraining member and the wall of the container, and/or through the apertures in the liquid-restraining member, thereby preventing the liquid from overflowing and escaping from the saucepan. A mesh plate 13 may optionally be fitted within the liquid-restraining member, so that the saucepan may be used as a steamer, and a lid 10 may be adapted to fit on top of the said member. Figure 2 shows a similar arrangement for converting an open-topped container into a saucepan of the type described above.
