Abstract

1,128,567. Ceramic to metal seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 21 Sept., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965] No. 42166/66. Heading B3V. A ceramic to metal seal comprises a refractory metal joined to a ceramic body by a composition including a sealing glass and zirconium dioxide. The metal may be Nb, the ceramic may be polycrystalline alumina and the sealing glass formed predominantly of alumina. A niobium end cap may be sealed to the alumina body of an alkali-metal vapour lamp by coating the cap with zirconium hydride and reducing the coating to Zr. The assembled seal is then heated to alloy the Zr with the Nb and form at the surface of the Zr zirconium dioxide which is incorporated with the sealing glass.
