Abstract

1,127,730. Polymers of unsaturated N-methylol compounds etherified with trialkylsilyl groups. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 26 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 34361/67. Heading C3P. Spontaneously cross-linking polymers are prepared by polymerizing or copolymerizing, in the presence of a free radical catalyst, an N-methylol group-containing olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid amide, carboxylic acid imide, urea or urethane, wherein the or each N- methylol group is etherified by a trialkylsilyl group. Suitable etherified methylol amide monomers are those of the formula wherein R represents H, methyl, or R 1 represents H, Cl, methyl or ethyl, R 2 represents H, C 1 -C 18 alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, and R 3 represents alkyl. Suitable imide monomers are derived from maleic acid, citraconic acid and itaconic acid imides. As urea derivatives, compounds containing an N-vinyl, N-allyl or N-isopropenyl group are specified; and as urethanes, vinyl, allyl, undecylenyl or oleyl carbamates or carbamates having an N-ethylenically unsaturated substituent. (The methylol alkylsilyl ether monomers may be obtained by the process described in copending Specification 1,127,729.) Many examples of comonomers are listed, the preferred compounds being styrene, ethyl, butyl, hexyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethylene glycol monomethacrylate, propanediol mono-acrylate and -methacrylate, vinyl acetate, 2-vinyl pyridine and vinyl isobutyl ether. Polymerization may be effected in bulk or solution. Suitable catalysts include azodiisobutyronitrile, cumene hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide and di-t.-butyl peroxide. A regulator such as dodecyl, t.- dodecyl or hexyl mercaptan or diisopropyl xanthogenate may also be present during polymerization. The polymers are easily crosslinked and insolubilized under the influence of water, acids or alkalis, or heat and also with aminoplast resins, phenolic resins, and epoxy/ phenol condensation products; the products being suitable for producing mouldings, coatings, impregnations, films and adhesives.
