Abstract

[Also in Division G5] In a capstan/pinch roller drive, the pinch roller comprises an annular member radially movable with respect to a hub under the action of an external force to implement the drive and containing rigid elements to return the annular member to its concentric position when the force is removed. As shown in Fig. 1, the annular member 40 of the roller 16 is drawn towards the capstan 12 by energization of an electromagnet 14 to transmit drive to a perforated paper or similar tape 10, the capstan and roller being constantly driven. The pinch roller (Fig. 2) comprises a hub 30 journalled in a support 18, and an annular member 40 preferably having an inner surface of hard material (e g synthetic polymer) and an outer surface of r g .e c material. The hub 30 has radial bores carrying torque-transmitting balls 48 arranged to enter longitudinal grooves in the annulus 40, and further balls 54 also arranged in radial bores but limited in radial movement by caps 58. Centrifugal action of the balls 54 causes the annulus 40 to be centred with respect to the hub 30 when freely rotating and when the external force is removed. The balls 54 may be staggered (Fig. 8, not shown).
