Abstract

Projectiles.-Consists in providing a projectile with two or more pivoted wings, so arranged as to be automatically extensible during flight to support the projectile in the air. Figs. 1 and 4 show a projectile adapted to be fired from a smooth-bore gun, wings D, D<1> being hinged longitudinally so that normally they fold around the body A, as shown. In flight, the wings are extended by airpressure under them, and this action may be assisted by springs L. To effect a further spreading of the wings, each one may be made in two sections, hinged together. The wings may be geared together. In a further modification, the axis of the hinge of the wings may be slightly inclined to the longitudinal axis of the projectile by adjusting the forward end of the hinge in a radial direction, the object being to attain a greater lifting-power. Fig. 7 shows the invention applied to a projectile for a rifled gun. The wings D are carried by rings H, I mounted on ball bearings. A collapsible vane K is secured to the ring H, to prevent rotation of the rings due to friction.
