Abstract

1,126,289. Vitamin compositions. F. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO., A.G. 11 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 21875/67. Heading A5B. A water-dispersible, water free, vitamin preparation is prepared by mixing together A) 250,000 to 1,000,000 I.U/ml of vitamin-A alcohol or a vitamin-A ester [the proportion of C 12 -C 18 fatty acid ester of vitamin-A being at most 30% of the preparation on a wt/vol basis], B) a non-ionogenic poly(ethylene oxide)- based emulsifier in an amount of at least 0.5 fold of the vitamin-A on a weight basis and at most 50% of the preparation on a wt/vol basis [at least 30% by weight of the emulsifier being present as a polyoxyethylated polypropyleneglycol] and C) a solvent consisting of a water-miscable alcohol or a dialkyl amide of a monocarboxylic acid. Ingredient A) may be vitamin-A alcohol and/or vitamin-A acetate with vitamin-A palmitate; vitamin-A propionate and oleate are also exemplified; B) a mixture of polyoxyethylated castor oil and/or polyethyleneglycol sorbitan mono (fatty acid) esters with polyoxyethylated polypropylene glycol and C) ethanol, propanol or isopropanol, and N,N-diethylacetamide, N,N-dimethyl-acetamide or N,N-dimethylformamide. The vitamin-A may be partially replaced by other fatsoluble vitamins e.g. vitamin E and/or vitamin- D. The vitamin preparations may also contain antioxidants in an amount not exceeding 2% by weight e.g. butylated hydroxy-toluene, butylated hydroxy-anisole, ethoxyquin or propyl gallate; synergists e.g. citric acid, ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, ethanolamine or diethanolamine; wetting agents e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, thickening agents e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidone; odorants, flavourings and colouring materials. The vitamin preparations may be mixed with aqueous suspensions of 2-(4'-thiazolyl)-benzimidazole.
