Abstract

1,125,928. Flexible mandrels. TOOLS FOR BENDING Inc. 8 Aug., 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 35361/66. Heading B3E. A tube bending mandrel comprises a series of flexibly interconnected mandrel sections 12 arranged in end-to-end relation, each mandrel section comprising an outer ring 34 having in one end an inner concentric socket portion 48 and a generally spherical ball portion 44 projecting from the opposite end of the ring into the socket portion of the adjacent mandrel section, and an annular, releasable retention member 62 inserted at the entrance to the socket 48 to retain therein the spherical ball portion 44 of the next mandrel section while permitting freedom of rotation and pivotal movement of the ball 44. The retention member 62, in the form of a wire ring, instead of being received in a groove in a socket 48 threaded into the ring 34, may be received in a groove in an inward extension of the ring 34 over the socket. Alternatively the retention member may comprise a two part member having a concave inner surface and received in the ring 34 above a threaded-in socket member.
