Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A vacuum insulated container has inner and outer walls 10 and 12 connected to a common neck tube 14 by virtue of corrugations, in the flanges 16 and 18 of the walls, which mate with annular recesses in the tube. The tube 14 is joined to flanges 18 and 16 by magnetically deforming the flanges inwardly against the neck tube. When the walls 10 and 12 are of aluminium and the tube is a nickel base alloy or a plastics material, the assembly is positioned within a solenoid with a mandrel supporting the tube and pulsating electrical energy is supplied to the solenoid. Eddy currents deform the shells inwardly to produce a joint profile as, for example, shown in Fig. 5. When the walls are of stainless steel or a material having a relatively low conductivity, a driving ring 20 of aluminium or copper is used to drive the appropriate flange against the tube. An epoxy based adhesive can be used in conjunction with the joints, the adhesive being applied before the deformation step.
