Abstract

1,125,540. Crimping tools. AMP Inc. 27 June, 1967 [17 Aug., 1966; 20 Jan., 1967], No. 29574/67. Addition to 1,043,653. Heading B4W. The apparatus described for trimming the ends of wire and crimping ferrules on to the wire ends is similar to that disclosed in the Specification 1,043,653 in which an anvil and die are relatively movable to effect the trimming and crimping operation, but the present Specification describes a pair of shearing members 98 and 99 located one on each side of the die 76 and which co-operate with the end faces of the die during relative movement between the die and anvil 68 to shear the ends of the wire and whereupon subsequent movement between the die and anvil crimps a ferrule to the trimmed ends of the wire to join the wire ends together in overlapping parallel relationship. Wire supporting plates 126, 128 are secured to the outer sides of the members 98 and 99 respectively and are provided with slots 130, 130<SP>1</SP>, 132, 132<SP>1</SP> into which the wire ends are located in crossed relationship. A lostmotion connection is provided between the shearing members and the anvil block 38 by way of elongated slots 104 in the members 98 and 99 which co-operate during operation with a pin member 106 in the block 38. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the wire ends 14, 16 are retained in holding plates (148), (150), by spring members (154), (162), a lost-motion connection between the shear members and the holding members is not necessary since the portions of the wires 14, 16 between the end (160), (167) of the members (154), (162), and the plates (148), (150) can remain stationary due to slot clearance while the plates move upwards to effect the crimping operation. In a further embodiment the shearing members depend downwardly from a slide portion attached to the movable anvil and have respective shearing portions which are of opposite bend to effect trimming of the wire prior to crimping.
