To determine the salt content of crude oil by conductivity measurement, the crude is first shaken with a slightly polar aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g. xylol, n-butyl alcohol is then added to the solution, and finally methyl alcohol. This avoids the precipitation of asphaltic and bituminous matter that occurs if methyl alcohol is mixed directly with the crude. The conductance of this solution is measured by a pair of electrodes in a cylindrical shield having a fixed spacing and connected through an ammeter to an A.C. supply. The ammeter has two shunts to provide to ranges of conductivity. The circuit is calibrated by first adjusting the shunts with a standard resistance in place of the electrodes, and then testing known samples comprising a mixture of calcium, sodium and magnesium chlorides in methyl and butyl-alcohol.
