Abstract

1,125,328. Heat-treating stainless steel. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 9, 1966 [Nov. 30, 1965|, No.50194/66. Heading C7A. Austenitic stainless steels are heated in a vacuum or inert atmosphere to a temperature above 1050‹ C, but preferably not exceeding 1300‹ C, for 2 to 10 hours, and are then cooled rapidly to room temperature, as by water quenching. The steels are then reheated to 800‹ - 900‹ C for not less than 1 hour, preferably for several hours, again in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere, after which they are cooled rapidly to room temperature. Corrosion resistance of the steels below 500‹ C is claimed to be improved by the treatment, which produces a microstructure of discrete chromium carbide particles at the grain boundaries.
