Abstract

1,124,963. Renewable strip filters for liquids. M. E. L. EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd. 6 May, 1966 [11 June, 1965], No. 24759/65. Heading B1D. The apparatus comprises liquid-pervious means for supporting a portion of a strip of filter medium, the portion forming at least part of a means for receiving a flow of unfiltered liquid, normally-stationary means which are operable to move the strip of filter medium to replace that portion of the strip with a fresh portion, and means responsive to variations in the weight of liquid in the receiving means which bring the movable means into operation automatically when the weight exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, a liquid-pervious endless belt 9, 11 is formed into a trough at its upper run by two pairs of longitudinally-spaced sprockets 12, 13, between which the upper run sags, and by two transversely-spaced bars 36 arranged in the region between the sprockets. The trough supports a portion of a strip of filter medium 6 of paper, cloth or the like, drawn from a roll 7 and eventually disposed of in a bin 22. During filtration, the endless belt is stationary, but when, owing to clogging of the filter medium, the weight of liquid in the trough exceeds a predetermined value, a transverse lever 23, pivoted to the far side of casing 1 at 24, spring-supported (29) at its nearer end, and supporting the trough at spaced points along it, tilts to close a micro-switch 28. The switch controls a motor 18 which drives the belt by a further sprocket 17, and opens when the clogged portion has been moved on. In another embodiment, not described in detail, the filter medium is associated with a perforate plate at the bottom of a tank, and the tank is pivotally supported so that it moves about the support point to actuate the switch when appropriate.
