Abstract
1,124,776. Mechanical seals. BORG. WARNER CORP. 20 April, 1966 [6 July, 1965], No. 17360/66. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 13, e.g. a centrifugal pump shaft, where it extends through a housing 10 and comprising an axially movable non-rotary sealing ring 29 urged into sealing contact with a rotary sealing ring 19 by a flexible bellows 38, the bellows is secured at one end to an axially movable adapter ring 39, whereby the pressure exerted by the bellows on the ring 29 can be adjusted and means are provided for supplying lubricant to the sealing faces 55 and 56 of the rings 29 and 19. The ring 39 is axially slidable in a flange 40 secured with another flange 37 by bolts 41 to the pump housing 10. The position of the ring 39 and thus the amount of bellows compression is adjustable by screws 46 and the ring is sealed to the flange 37 by O-rings 44 and 45. The other end of the metal bellows 38 is welded to a backing ring 30 for the ring 29. To prevent rotation of the rings 29 and 30, a mounting ring 31 surrounding both rings has keys 32 engaging keyways in the rings and keys 35 received in keyways 36 in the flange 37. A bore 50 in the ring 39 is connected to a bore 52 in the ring 30 by a flexible pipe 51 coiled around the bellows 38 and a lubricant inlet 47 in the flange 40 communicates with the sealing faces 55 and 56 via bores 48 and 50, pipe 51 and bores 52 and 54. Lubricant drawn into a cylinder 57 from a reservoir 64a by a spring-loaded differential piston 60 can be injected into the inlet 47, when required, by actuation of a three-way valve 68 controlling the supply of pressure fluid from the pump housing to the piston 60. Cooling fluid circulated by vanes 70 on to ring 29 is cooled in an external heat exchanger 80. The radial surface 82 of the ring 30 is formed with an annular groove 83 connected by radial grooves 84 with the inner periphery of the ring. V- shaped grooves 26 on a sleeve 16 keyed to the shaft from a labyrinth seal with a bore 11 in the housing 10.
