Abstract
A fibrous glass layer e.g. fibreglass sheets, woven fabrics, fibre mats is coated with a solution in say organic solvents of an uncured polytrimellitamide polymer having imide forming groups and being soluble in N, N-dimethylacetamide, said uncured polymer being convertible to an aromatic polytrimellitamide polymer having no uncoverted imide-forming groups and being insoluble in N, N-dimethylacetamide by curing, and then heated to form a tack-free coated glass layer under such conditions to prevent complete imidization of the imide-forming groups. The polymers are described in Patent No. 1,056,564. A plurality of the tack-free coated glass layers are then laminated under heat and pressure to bond the layers together and to obtain a final cure of the polymer. The laminating may be carried out at 330-500 DEG F and 1000-2000 p.s.i., the resulting laminate having say 12, 25 or more layers. The polymers may be prepared from p, p1-oxybis (aniline), and p, p1-methylenebis (aniline). In Example (2) laminates are prepared from a glass cloth coated with three applications of the polymer, and in Example (3) from a combination of 2-coat and 3-coat plys. The products have a high heat distortion temperature and strength.
