Abstract

1,123,886. Elastic-fluid turbines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. April 28, 1967 [June 28, 1966], No. 19623/67. Heading F1T. A central admission double opposed-flow axialflow plastic-fluid turbine comprises a pair of rows of stator vanes 16, 20, Fig. 5, co-operating with a pair of rows of first-stage rotor blades 18 and having shrouds 40, 42 which jointly define in part an annular space 28 into which the motive fluid is admitted, a stationary annular wall 44 spanning the axial space between the rows of stator vanes and having axially opposed peripheral marginal portions 45, 46 disposed in lapping relation with the shrouds 40, 42 with seals 50, 51 interposed between them, the seals being carried by either the shrouds or, as shown, the marginal portions. The seals 50, 51, which permit relative thermal expansion of the parts, are of arcuate segmental form, and located in peripheral grooves 47, 48, each segment being pressed outwards by a leaf spring 52, Figs. 4 and 5, located in the groove. The upper and lower halves 44a, 44b of the annular wall 44 are provided with pairs of diametricallyopposed radial struts 61, 55 respectively which are bolted together to unite the two halves. Each strut 55 has a slot 58 engaged by a key 59 and a bolt 57 carried by a flange 56 fixed to the lower half 21b of the outer casing of the turbine whereby movement of the strut is restricted in all but the radial direction. Additionally, each annular wall half 44a, 44b has a vertical dowel (69), Fig.3 (not shown), engaging a radial bore in a member (67) carried by the outer casing and permitting radial movement only. Radial expansion of the annular wall 44 is thereby allowed.
