Abstract

1,123,848. Ignition systems. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 9, 1967 [July 18, 1966], No. 26644/67. Heading F1B. In an ignition system a primary circuit includes a battery 27, a primary winding of an induction coil 10, a switch 33 and a voltage and current limiting arrangement, a secondary circuit includes a secondary winding 12 of the induction coil and an ignition device for igniting the fuel air mixture and the voltage and current limiting arrangement is such that it limits to the value of the terminal voltage of the battery the peak transient voltage induced in the secondary winding when transformed to the primary winding and it has negligible impedance when this peak transient voltage is reached. As shown the arrangement comprises a parallel circuit of a resistor 29 and a saturable inductor 30 connected in series with the battery 27 and primary winding. The resistance of the resistor may be selected to critically damp voltage transients in the primary circuit and the saturable inductor may be designed to reach saturation when the voltage induced in the secondary winding transformed to the primary winding reaches the terminal voltage of the battery. An ignition system as claimed in Specification 1, 075, 889 may incorporate the features set out above. The switch may comprise a transistor the base of which is connected to contacts which when closed render the transistor conducting. A Zener diode may be connected across the transistor. In an alternative embodiment the device 41 is omitted.
