Abstract

1,123,580. Rolling tubes. CALUMET & HECLA Inc. 18 Nov., 1966 [17 Feb., 1966], No. 51807/66. Heading B3M. Rolling apparatus for reducing a tube includes a stationary tapered mandrel 26, a saddle 30 which carries grooved rolls 10 and which is reciprocated relative to the mandrel, and mechanism for intermittently indexing and feeding a tube over the mandrel at the end of each stroke of the saddle. Recesses 24 and 25 in the grooves of the rolls allow the feeding and indexing movements to take place. The rolls are reciprocated in a carriage 30, Fig. 2, by means of crank arms 36 connected to a motor-driven shaft 40, gears 46 on the roll ends meshing with a rack fixed to a base 37 in order to rotate the rolls as they are reciprocated. A shaft 50 from the output of a gear-box 42 provides the feeding and indexing movements of the tubing. The shaft drives a reciprocating plunger 54 which intermittently feeds the tubing by a screw-and-nut mechanism 55, 57 and rotates it using a chuck 62. A further shaft 64 provides synchronized feeding and rotation of the tubing at the opposite end of the mandrel.
