A wire-wound rod for spreading coating compositions comprises a rod or cylinder 13 on which is a close helical first winding of at least one wire 12, the turns being in lateral contact and the first winding having a thickness equal to the diameter of the wire, and a helical second winding of a wire 11 bedded in the valleys of the first winding, the wire 11 having a diameter greater than “ the diameter of the wire 12 and the spacing of adjacent turns of the second winding being greated than 1/10 the diameter of wire 11. The first winding may consist of several wires, and the second winding may be formed of a wire of greater diameter than the wire of the first winding.
