Cylinder machines; tripping arrangements.- A travelling cylinder printing machine comprises a base 23, at least a portion thereof forming a plane which defines a print bed adapted to support a printing means, e.g. plate (20) (Fig. 1), a carriage 36 mounted for reciprocating travel across the print bed, a platen assembly, e.g. including an L-shaped bracket 39, 41, mounted for pivotal movement, e.g. about rod 44, relative to the carriage and also including a platen roller 43 rotatably mounted, e.g. about shaft 42 at one end of the bracket, movable means, e.g. yoke-shaped bar 46, extending parallel to the path of travel by the carriage for rooking the platen assembly about its pivot point 44 to elevate the platen roller from the print bed when rocked in one direction and to lower the platen roller toward the print bed when rocked in the opposite direction. As shown in solid lines, Fig. 3, the gate 46 is shifted to the right thus rocking the platen assembly by way of shaft 45 about rod 44 and seating rod 44 in a detent 49 on cam 48 until bracket bar 41 abuts adjustable screw 57. This is the printing position and the pressure of roller 43 on avil 24 is adjustable by screw 57. Manual movement of carriage 37 via handle 37 in the Y direction performs the imprinting function, carriage 37 being guided by bearings (29), (31), (32), (33), (Fig. 2), travelling in tracks on guide rails (25), (26), (Fig. 1). When carriage 37 reaches its extreme right-hand position protruding end 53 of yoke 46 engages member (60), (Fig. 1), shifting the yoke to the left and simultaneously rocking bracket 38 about rod 44 to the position shown dotted where rod 44 is engaged in a detent (51, Fig. 2) on the opposite side of cam 48, thus raising the roller 43 from the print bed, and allowing the carriage to be returned across the print bed to its start position where the yoke engages member 59 (Fig. 1) causing the roller to be lowered once again.
