Abstract

1,122,634. Garden shears. R. L. SPELLER. 3 Oct., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965; 22 Feb., 1966], Nos. 42092/65 and 7649/66. Heading B4B. Garden shears comprise two blades 11, 12, Fig. 2, pivoted together at 13 and each having a handle 24 pivotally attached to a blade stub 14 or 15, the handles being detachably connected to one another at the cross-over point so that when separated from one another they can be turned about their respective blade stubs so as to lie in the cutting plane of the blades, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position the shears can be used for edge trimming. In this position, each handle has secured thereto a spring-biased sleeve 18 provided with recesses 19 engaging studs 17 provided on a spindle 16 of the blade stub. The sleeves can be withdrawn against the spring bias to disengage the studs from the recesses whereupon the handles can be turned to a position in which they cross one another. The handles may be connected to one another at the cross-over point by a universal joint comprising (a) interengaging ball and cap bolts (27, 25) Fig. 5 (not shown), (b) interengaging eye bolts (29, 30), Fig. 6 (not shown), or (c) a bolt (35) Fig. 8 (not shown), in one handle carrying a ball (36) which sits in a cup (37) secured by a bolt (38) to the other handle, a cap (39) being slidably engaged on the second handle so as to engage over the ball (36) and being secured in position by a locking screw (40). Alternatively, the handles (24) are connected to one another by a simple bolt (33), Fig. 7 (not shown), and the handles are secured to the blade stubs (14, 15) via a spigot socket connection (34) enabling the handles to pivot relative to the sleeves (18). In another modification, the handles are locked in the cutting plane of the blades by means of locking screws (42), Fig. 9 (not shown), each insertable through a threaded hole in a sleeve (41) carried at the lower end of each handle (24), the sleeves being located. on spigots at the ends of the blade stubs (14, 15).
