A rotary lawn mower has a friction slip coupling between its motor shaft and cutter 18 comprising a driven part 7 having a conical surface urged into engagement with a corresponding surface of a part 3 by spring discs 13 which yield on the cutter striking an obstacle, permitting the driven part 7 to tilt until it engages a friction brake ring 19.
