Abstract
1,122,004. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 4 Oct., 1965 [5 Oct., 1964], No. 42022/ 65. Heading E1F. An underwater drilling wellhead assembly having pipes 22, 50 penetrating the bed 13, is freed from the bed to permit raising to the drilling vessel 11 by severing the pipe 50 in the bed and by applying tension to the pipe 52 to break a joint therein. The pipe 50 is severed by a cutter 55. Hydraulic fluid is supplied to the well by a pipe 57 carrying the cutter, and rams 60 of a blow out preventer 28 or the bag of a blow out preventer (29) (not shown) are or is closed about the pipe 57 so that hydraulic pressure shears pin in a collar 51 on the pipe 22 to free an upper part 22a. The assembly is raised by hoisting the marine conductor 32, lengths of the conductor being removed as necessary. An alternative method of shearing the pins comprises closing the upper blind rams (not shown) of the preventer after removing the pipe 57, and supplying pressure fluid to the interior of the preventer. If a coupling (31) (Fig. 1, not shown) joining the marine conductor to a flexible joint (30) on top of the blow out preventer (29) above the preventer (28) cannot take tension, a string having an enlargement engaged by the rams 60 of the preventer 28 is used to hoist the assembly.
