Abstract

1,121,632. Change-speed gear. DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 1852/66. Heading F2D. A change-speed gear having high and low speed ranges comprises coaxial input and output shafts 11, 12, a parallel layshaft 13, a gear 14 fast on the input shaft and constantly meshing a gear 15 free on and clutchable to the layshaft, a gear 17 fast on the layshaft and constantly meshing a gear 16 rotationally free coaxially of the input output shafts and clutchable to either or both of said shafts, and gears 18-21 fast on the layshaft and constantly meshing gears 118-121 free on and clutchable to the output shaft. The gear 16 may berotatably mounted on the end of the input or, as shown, the output shaft. The pitch circle diameter of either one of the gears 14, 16 exceeds that of the other. Positive clutch sleeves 30, 31, respectively for clutching the gears 16, 17 to the input shaft and the layshaft, are axially slidable by forks (32), (33) interconnected by a lever (34) to ensure the engagement of only one of these clutches at a time, the forks being operated by a piston (37) actuated pneumatically or hydraulically under the control of a valve which is Bowden-cable operated by a gear-shift levermounted push-pull button. A reverse idler shaft (22) has free thereon and clutchable thereto a gear (23) constantly meshing a gear 24 fast on the layshaft, and a gear (25) fast thereon meshing a gear 26 splined on the output shaft and integral with a positive clutch sleeve 42. Positive clutch sleeves 40, 41 and the sleeve 42, respectively for clutching the gears 16, 118 and 119, 120 and 21, to the output shaft are axially slidable, from neutral positions, by forks 140- 142 fast on shift rods 43-45. A clutch sleeve (49) for clutching the gear (23) to the reverse idler shaft is axially slidable, from a neutral position, by a fork (48) connected by a lever (47) to a shift rod (46). The shift rods are selectively shiftable by a gear-shift-lever-actuable, rotatable (cross-shift) and slidable (gear-establishment), spindle 56 having an arm 55 the end of which is engageable in grooves of members 50 carried by the shift rods. A T-sectioned interlock member 52 engaging the grooves of the members 50 and movable with the arm 55 during cross-shift prevents simultaneous gearestablishing movement of more than one shift rod. A power take-off shaft 27 is driven through speed increasing gears 28, 29 respectively fast on the layshaft 13 and free on and clutchable to the shaft 27. A brake engageable on disengagement of the main, engine to input shaft, friction clutch (not shown) comprises a disc 60 fast on the input shaft and a shoe 59 carried by a lever 58 which is acted on by the clutch-actuating cross-shaft 57 through an arm 61, a rod 62, rod abutments 63, 64 and springs 65, 66.
