Abstract

1,121,621. Cars continuous forming trains; hopper wagons; doors. WHEWAY WATSON Ltd. 2 Aug., 1965 [21 May, 1964], No. 20974/64. Heading B7L. [Also in Division B8] A train of wheeled containers running on rails R Fig. 1, comprises a leading four-wheeled car 1A and containers 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 each having only a pair of wheels 9 at the rear end and in which the front end is mounted on the rear-wheeled end of the next adjacent container, the car and containers being interconnected by vertically spaced hinge devices 10, 11 Fig. 2, of which the devices 10 are a pair of horizontally spaced horizontal hinges and the devices 11 are a pair of horizontally spaced pin-and-slot means 52, 50A of which the pins are horizontal whereby relative up-and-down pivotal movements of the car and containers can take place during operation on an undulating track. The car 1A includes an electric motor 3 drivingly connected to the leading roller 4 of an endless loading conveyor 5 provided with cross flights described with reference to Fig. 3, extending along the tops of the containers and having ports 35, 36 articulated by the devices 10. The conveyor is connected by an inclined portion 14 to a lower horizontal portion 13 mounted on wheels at a loading point, e.g. a coal face. Each container 1 or 2 comprises a base frame 19, end walls 17 and an intermediate wall 18 forming with floors 23 Fig. 3 a pair of compartments. The floor of each compartment is divided longitudinally into two doors 8 each pivoted at 26 to an upwardly slidable portion 22 of a side wall 20. The doors are opened downwardly about the pivots 26 to discharge loads on to a conveyor 7 running between the rails R by means of double acting hydraulic piston and cylinder devices 27 pivoted to the frame 19 and the doors 8. The devices 27 operable by hand pumps 28 and control valves 29 Fig. 2, raise the portions 22 to cause the pivoting of the doors, the latter being slidably supported by flanged rollers 33 engaging flanges 54 on the doors. The devices 10, 11 mounted on adjacent portions of the conveyor 5 are described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Each device 10 comprises a pair of coaxial bosses at one side of the train, one mounted on one conveyor portion and the other on the next adjacent conveyor portion and apertured to receive a horizontal pin. Each device 11 comprises a lug on one car at one side of the train carrying a horizontal pin engaging in horizontal slots in a pair of lugs on the next adjacent car.
