Abstract

1,121,451. Magnetic separators. W. H. LYONS. 13 March, 1967 [11 Dec., 1965], No. 52704/65. Heading B2J. Apparatus for separating metal scrap from refuse 12, Fig. 1, comprises a soft iron loop core 6 across a conveyor belt 5. The core is suspended by adjustable and non-adjustable rods 8 and insulated straps 9, and has undercut slots 10 across its underside, pairs of slots accommodating overlapping coils 11. The coils are supplied with 3-phase A.C. at e.g. 400 to 440 volts. As refuse 12 on the belt 5 passes beneath the core 6, non-ferrous conducting articles 13 contained therein intersect the magnetic field, and are displaced from the belt into a collector 14. The coils are protected by a fibre-glass sheet. A second embodiment for removing metal from flow inducts magnetic cores 16, Fig. 2, mounted on a motor-driven rotatable fibre-glass disc 17, and supplied with poly phase A.C. via bushes 22, slip-rings 23 and conductors 24. In operation, metal is displaced to the left. The coils are respectively supplied with current only when above and transversely of the belt, by switches 29 and a stationary cam 30. The underside of the disc 17 is swept clear of adherent particles by a rotating brush 26. Levitation of ferrous material is effected in both embodiments by a vertical coil 31. Discharge of ferrous and non- ferrous materials may be at opposite sides by means of a known magnetic separator.
