Abstract

1,121,381. Puffed starchy products. SPROUT, WALDRON & CO. Inc. 10 Feb., 1966, No. 5979/66. Headings A2B and A2Q. In continuously producing puffed pellets of cereal materials or other starchy products such as potatoes for animal or human consumption, the cereal material is fed by means 20 to a pressure cooking unit 22 supplied with steam and maintained at superatmospheric pressure, the cooked material is passed to an extruding assembly 24 and extruded into atmospheric pressure, and the extruded material is cut into pellets. In the feeding means the material is fed by a screw feed 36 along a section 35 at the end of which is a rotatable axially movable member 37. This member 37 is kept in its closed position till a plug of material sufficient to prevent loss of pressure from cooking unit 22 when member 37 is moved to its open position, is formed against it. When in its open position member 37 is rotated to break the inner end of the plug material into fragments which fall into cooking unit 22 along which the material is conveyed by rotating paddles 95 to extruder 24. In extruder 24 the cooked material is screw fed to the plate 140 having the extrusion orifices 141 such that a plug of material is built up against the extrusion plate to prevent loss of pressure in the cooking unit and extruder, as the material is extruded throught the orifices 141. The extruded material is cut by wires 145 mounted between rotating cones 146, 147. One end of casing 106 of cooking unit 22 may be hinged to the body of the casing 106 such that it can be opened if desired.
