Abstract

1,121,281. Safety harness. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. 16 July, 1965 [17 July, 1964,] No. 29294/64. Heading A3V. [Also in Division E2] A vehicle seat and safety harness combination comprises a strap 13 having one end anchored low down at one side of the seat 11 and extending in one continuous run to an inertia reel 12 which is mounted near the top of the seat back and near that side of the seat where said anchorage is disposed and a quick release buckle device consisting of two separable portions 17 and 19 latching one to the other, one portion 17 having a latching tongue 18 and the other portion 19 being in the form of a receptor to receive the tongue, one portion 19 of the quick release buckle device being fastened to the seat low down at the opposite site to said anchorage and the other portion 17 being free running on the strap whereby when the two buckle portions are latched together, that part of the strap between the anchorage and the buckle device consistitutes a lap strap and that part of the strap between the buckle device and the harness reel constitues a diagonal breast strap. As described the portion 19 of the buckle has a passage 25 therein to receive the tongue and a spring urged latching plunger 28, a slide in a second passage 27 transverse to and intersecting the first passage, the plunger being arranged to allow insertion of the tongue into the receptor portion 19 but having a detent that engages automatically in a notch 24 of the tongue and thereby prevents withdrawal of the tongue until manually released by movement of the plunger endwise to disengage the detent from the notch. The plunger is moved by a trigger lever 34 pivotally mounted in a recess 36 in the receptor portion, the lever having a cam 35 which engages the end of the plunger. In an modification, however, the end of the plunger is extended to the exterior of the receptor body to serve as a push button. The plunger is urged to the latching position by a spring 32 and it has a recess through which the tongue can pass, the end of the recess adjacent the spring 32 having a sloping face and an acute angle shoulder formed between the face and the edge of the plunger constituting the detent. The portion 17 is formed with two notches so that it can be inserted in alternative positions and the strap is connected to the portion 17 by passing around the slidable bar. The receptor portion 19 is bolted to the side of the seat. The anchorage is bolted to the opposite side of the seat by means of a lug and has a slot to which the strap is attached by sewn loop.
