Abstract
1,120,973. Pinless hinge, with members formed by extrusion. GREAT LAKES ALUMINIUM FABRICATORS Inc. 9 Feb., 1967, No. 6217/67. Heading E2F. [Also in Division B8] A hinge comprises three members formed of extruded material such as aluminium, wherein two elongated side members having longitudinal arcuate slots therein are hinged about a third elongated member, of arcuate cross section, having a width equal to the total depths of the two arcuate slots, with one of its sides disposed in each of the slots. A side member 34 of rectangular cross section, has in its upper face (Fig. 3) an arcuate slot 44 with an elongated tab 46 extending along the convex side of its opening, and a small channel 54 along one corner. The second side member 40 is of identical cross section except for a lip 56 in place of the channel, which engages the latter to form a hinge line. The side members also have a further slot in the face opposite to that having the arcuate slot, for retaining dished edges 22 and 24 of panels forming the two halves of a hinged box or case (see Div. B8). A third, arcuate member 70, having the same curvature as the slots and a width equal to the sum of their depths, unites the two side members, its sides being slidably disposed one in each of the slots, and being prevented from removal therefrom by lips 72 which co-operate with the corresponding elongated tabs 46 and 60 in the arcuate slots these also limit the extent of opening of the hinge. The side members are biased into a closed or open position by arcuate springs 80, adjacent to each end of the hinge, which springs act as an over-centre linkage, the spring ends being maximally apart one from the other when the hinge is in a half open position.
