Abstract

Hydrocarbon fuels containing cobalt and/or one or more cobalt compounds are deactivated by the addition of 8-hydroxyquinoline and/or hydrogenated 8-hydroxyquinoline and/or alkyl-, aryl- and/or halogen-substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline or hydrogenated 8-hydroxyquinoline. Fuels specified are gasoline, kerosine and liquid gases. The fuels may also contain one or more compounds of general formula <FORM:1120498/C4-C5/1> where R is a heterocyclic radical having a -C = N- group in a 5- or 6-membered ring and Y is hydrogen or a cyclic or acyclic substituent or both Y's together with the <FORM:1120498/C4-C5/2> group form a cyclic structure, e.g. 1,3-di(21-pyridyl)iminoisoindoline.
