Abstract

Polymers of an unsymmetrical conjugated diolefin in which the units are predominantly 3,4, are made by effecting the polymerization of the diene at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. and a pressure from atmospheric to 100 atmospheres in the presence of a catalyst comprising sodium and/or potassium disposed on a precalcined adsorptive solid support having a surface area of from about 25 to 500 square metres per gram. Specified dienes are isoprene, 1,3 - pentadiene, 2 - methyl - 1,3 - pentadiene, 2,3 - dimethyl - 1,3 - pentadiene or 2 - ethyl - 1,3-butadiene. Preferred supports are crystalline aluminas, charcoal, magnesia, silica-aluminas, and silica - alumina - magnesia composites. The polymerization may be effected in a substantially dry hydrocarbon or ether-type diluent. The process may be carried out as a continuous process. The diene exemplified is isoprene.
