Abstract

In the examples a vapour-permeable leather substitute is made by impregnating a web with a mixture of (a) polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl sebacate, thermal stabilizer, sodium chloride, solvent naphtha, wetting agents and pigments; or (b) a polyurethane, 4,41methylene-bis -(2-chloro-aniline, triol, sodium chloride and methyl ethyl ketone, or (c) a polyurethane, with and without a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, dimethyl formamide and sodium chloride. The webs are then heated, calendered and leached in water. In control examples the sodium chloride is omitted from the mixtures.ALSO:A leather substitute is made by impregnating a non-woven felt with a solution of a polymer containing a solid particulate finely divide filler, heating to remove the solvent then leaching out the filler with a liquid which is non-solvent for the felt and polymer. The weight ratio of polymer to felt in the finished product is 0.38 to 1.5:1. The felt can be formed by mechanical entangling and have a density of 0.07-0.18 gm/cc. The impregnated felt can be calendered after removal of the solvent. The polymer can be a polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinylacetate copolymer, butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyacrylate, acrylonitrile rubber a polymer containing dialkyl or aryl alkyl siloxane units. The polymer can be formed in situ in the felt, e.g. by reacting a polyesteramide and an isocyanate or an impregnated polyurethane can be chain extended in situ, e.g. with 4.4\sv methylene-bis-(2 chloroaniline), or diol or triol or a mixture thereof. The heating can gel or cure the polymer. The polymer can contain thermal stabiliser and plasticiser e.g. dioctyl sebacate. The polymer solvent can be tetrahydrofuran. N-methyl pyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide solvent, naphtha or methyl ethyl ketone. The leachable filler may be water-soluble, e.g. salt, NaCl Na2SO4 or a sugar, or an acid-soluble substance such as chalk. The filler: polymer ratio can be 1/3 to 3:1. The impregnant can contain a surfactant, e.g. an alkali metal salt of a sulphonated dicarboxylic acid ester, on a pigment. The fibres forming the felt can be natural or synthetic staple fibres, e.g. of nylon, polyethylene, terephthalate, polypropylene or mixtures thereof.
