Abstract
Substituted anthraquinones are produced by the oxidation of anthraquinols which are liberated by the treatment with acid of the salts produced by treating an N,N1-disubstituted-tetrahydro-4,41-bipyridyl with a substituted anthraquinone.ALSO:N,N1 - disubstituted - 4,41 - bipyridylium salts are produced by treating an N,N1-disubstituted-tetrahydro-4,41-bipyridyl with a substituted, 9, 10-anthraquinone, the anthraquinone being such that the corresponding 9,10-anthraquinol can be oxidized to the anthraquinone by oxygen and also being such that it is a hydrogen acceptor and has a redox potential more positive than-1.48 v. with respect to the standard calomel electrode. The salts may be reacted with acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid to give other salts. The liberated 9,10-anthraquinol may be oxidized by oxygen to the corresponding anthraquinone.
